Valley in France: Maurienne

The Maurienne (Moriana, in Italian), is a French valley located in the French department of Savoie. The territory corresponds to the 120-km-long Arc valley and includes part of the Vanoise National Park, in the continuity of the Italian Grand-Paradis National Park.

A border territory with Italy, the Maurienne is predisposed to be a privileged passageway and gateway to Italy and the High Alps. It can be reached from Italy from Susa.

Tourism plays an important role in the economy of this area. The Maurienne has 22 resorts, including five large interconnected ski areas where ski joëring (horse-drawn sleighs) can also be carried out, and about 166,000 tourist beds (SMBT 2017). The territory is dotted with bicycle paths: in fact, the Maurienne has established the label "La Maurienne, the largest cycling area in the world," which groups flat routes to mythical mountain roads that give access to legendary Alpine passes such as the Telegraph or the Madelaine.
